Abstract : A review of both laboratory and field studies on the effect of setting goals when learning or performing a task found that specific, challenging goals led more often to higher performance than easy goals, 'do your best' goals or no goals. This is one of the most robust and replicable findings in the psychological literature, with 90% of the studies showing positive or partially self-efficacy and the value placed on the outcome (Latham & Locke, 2007). In an early study on goal setting, Schunk (1985) set out to investigate the effects of goal setting on self-efficacy and academic performance through a math training program for 6th grade students with learning disabilities. The authors summarize 35 years of empirical research on goal-setting theory.
